Plastic Waste – Consequence of the Covid-19 Pandemic – More going to Landfill – According to an April 13, 2020 Wired story  “… recyclables like bottles and cans and cardboard are, in many places, going straight to the dump …; it doesn’t make economic sense … to process and sell recycled materials if they end up being more expensive than … virgin plastic …; no one notices, that the quality of the waste is going down; … single-use plastics are more popular than ever as people panic-buy; … restaurants … sell you a to-go bag full of individually wrapped dishes …; many recyclers have shut down in response to the pandemic. Plastic Waste – Enzymatic Recycling Process Described for Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) – On April 8, 2020, a paper describing an enzymatic recycling process for food and other packaging made of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) was published in the journal, Nature  – The recycling process was announced in an April 8 news release by the French company Carbios,  which is “… pioneering new bio-industrial solutions to reinvent the lifecycle of plastic and textile polymers …” – The company has developed “… a novel enzyme, which can biologically depolymerize all polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste …” – The company also described a process for recovery of the polymers for manufacture into new PET plastic products – #Recycling #PolyethyleneTerephthalate #PlasticWaste #FoodPackaging #SingleUsePlastic #Carbios #Enzymes
